Volunteer Position Descriptions

Packet Pick-Up/T-Shirts

Description: Volunteers are assigned to two areas within packet pick up–race packets and T-shirt distribution. Volunteers for race packets must verify participants’ identities and give them their race bibs. Volunteers for t-shirt distribution hand out race t-shirts and goody bags to participants.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hour shifts on Friday and Saturday

Check In Location: Sports & Fitness Expo; Virginia Beach Convention Center

What to Wear: Volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes.

Final Mile Packet Pick-Up/T-shirts

Description: Volunteers are assigned to one area for Final Mile packet pick up. Volunteers will give participants their race bibs, T-shirts, and goody bags all at once.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 4.5 hour shifts on Friday only

Check In Location: Sports & Fitness Expo; Virginia Beach Convention Center

What to Wear: Volunteers will receive a volunteer t-shirt and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes.

Start Line

Description: Volunteers at the start line assist race staff in putting up the start line arch, preparing and securing start corrals, controlling pre-race start crowds, and assisting with corral control and movement during the wave start.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 6 hour shifts

Check In Location: King Neptune Park, 31st Street, oceanfront

What to Wear: Volunteers for this position will be outside for their entire shift and should dress for the existing and forecasted weather. Volunteers will be given volunteer t-shirts and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes.

Finish Line

Description: Volunteers at the finish line assist race staff distributing medals, food, water, hats, and other items to finishers.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday

Check In Location: King Neptune Park, 31st Street, oceanfront

What to Wear: Volunteers are outside at the oceanfront for their entire shift and should dress for the existing and forecasted weather. Volunteers will be given volunteer t-shirts and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes.

Finish Line Catcher

Description: Finish Line Catcher volunteers assist the race medical staff identifying and assisting participants who might be having difficulties as they approach the finish, or immediately after finishing.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hour shifts on Saturday and Sunday

What to Wear: Volunteers are outside at the oceanfront for their entire shift and should dress for the existing and forecasted weather. Volunteers will be given volunteer t-shirts and are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.

8K Dry Bag Station

Description: Volunteers are assigned to the dry bag tent near the start & finish where participants drop off bags which contain their post-race clothing. Volunteers collect and sort these bags, and then re-distribute bags to the participants after they have finished.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 5 hour shift

What to Wear: Dry Bag volunteers are outside for their entire shift and should dress for the existing and forecasted weather. Volunteers will be given volunteer t-shirts and we encourage you to wear comfortable shoes.

Course Marshals

Description: Course Marshals are assigned to intersections and other critical points to prevent vehicle and pedestrian encroachment on the course during the race. Course Marshals must be at least 18 years old. As part of their assignment, Course Marshals are encouraged to cheer on participants and have fun!

Time Commitment: Maximum of 4.5 hours on Saturday; Maximum of 9 hours on Sunday

What to Wear: Course Marshals are outside for their entire shift and should dress for the existing and forecasted weather. Volunteers will be given long-sleeve volunteer t-shirts. We encourage you to wear comfortable shoes.

Water Stops

Description: Volunteers for water stops set up tables and cups of fluid before the race, pass out that fluid during the race, then break down and clean up the water stop after the race. Water stop volunteers are also encouraged to cheer on participants as they pass by!

Time Commitment: Maximum of 4 hours on Saturday; Maximum of 9 hours on Sunday (as the last runner passes your station, you may begin cleaning up)

Cheer Stations

Description: Cheer groups of 15 or more people are assigned to specific locations on the half and full marathon courses where access by spectators is difficult, or where participants typically need an uplifting boost. Each cheer station has a specific theme, and cheer group members are encouraged to dress up and decorate their station to match that theme.

Time Commitment: Maximum of 8 hours on Sunday

Check In Location: Cheer group participants report directly to their assigned station
