  • King Neptune Challenge >

Legend has it that Neptune, the Roman god, was King of the Sea. Do you have what it takes to become King of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront this year? Challenge yourself to our King Neptune Challenge. King Neptune Challenge participants will run the TowneBank Shamrock 8k on Saturday, March 19th, and then both the Anthem Half Marathon and the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon on Sunday, March 20th.  All King Neptune Challenge finishers will receive a total of six medals during the Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend!

To be eligible for the King Neptune Challenge, you must meet the following:

You must be able to run a Half Marathon in 1 hour and 45 minutes. This time will be verified in Athlinks. If this time can not be verified, you will not be able to participate in the King Neptune Challenge.

King Neptune Challengers will be required to be at the King Neptune Challenge transition area one hour and 45 minutes from the gun time start of the half marathon (8:45AM). If a participant does not reach the transition area by the 1:45 cut off, they will not be able to proceed to the full marathon start.  Participants who do make the transition area by 8:45am will be given a bracelet that will allow them to start the full marathon. These participants must be at the marathon start by 8:50am. If they do not make it to the start by 8:50am, they will not be allowed to start the full marathon.  These restrictions are necessary due to police requirements to re-open portions of Atlantic Avenue on the Full Marathon course.  Participants without the King Neptune bracelet will not be allowed on the marathon course, nor will they be eligible for the King Neptune finishers medal.

Important information:

King Neptune Participants will have a special King Neptune race bib.

Eligible King Neptune participants will receive a total of six finisher medals; on Saturday you’ll receive your TowneBank Shamrock 8k medal, then on Sunday you’ll gather up your Yuengling Shamrock Marathon medal, Whale Challenge medal, King Neptune Challenge medal, Anthem Half Marathon medal, and the Dolphin Challenge medal!

King Neptune Participants must drop off their dry bag / special needs bag (clear bag only) at 30th Street just past the Half Marathon finish line at the boardwalk.  King Neptune bag drop off is open from 6:15 am – 6:45 am.  The dry bag / special needs bag is for your transition area needs (nutrition, change of socks, etc.) as well as your items needed for after the race (dry shirt, change of shoes, etc.).

King Neptune Participants will have access to corral number 1 at the half marathon start, and will need to finish the half marathon and exit the finish line to the transition area.

Look for King Neptune transition from the half marathon finish chute. This is where you will receive your bracelet if you make the cut off time. This exit is for King Neptune participants only and will be where your dry bag / special needs bag will be as well as water, Gatorade, Powergels, andsnacks.  This exit will close at 8:45 am.

King Neptune Participants will leave their dry bag / special needs bag at the transition area and immediately go to the marathon start line before the 8:50 am cut off.

Cross the marathon finish line and receive your marathon medal, marathon finisher hat and marathon finisher item, then continue through the finish line chute to receive the rest of your loot which includes; Whale medal, King Neptune medal, Half Marathon medal, Dolphin Challenge medal, half marathon finisher hat, half marathon finisher item, and refreshments.  Your dry bag / special needs bag will also be waiting for you at the King Neptune medal table.

This Challenge is limited to participants who can finish the half marathon and start the full marathon by 8:50 am, and still be able to continue the marathon within the course time restrictions.  Participants who do not meet the time limits will not be qualified to complete the Challenge.
