We are now 8 weeks away from the 2012 Yuengling Shamrock Marathon Weekend, and as we count down to the 40th annual running of this great event, we will share with you each week a little history and trivia of the event. Here is this week's installment:
2005. In Shamrock’s 33rd year, the most compelling story came from 41 year old Megan Burns of Virginia Beach, who was running her first marathon in 15 years and who ended the day as both the open and masters women’s marathon champion with a 2:58:28 finish! She shared the champion’s stage with 27 year old Matt Bozung of Haslett, MI, whose decision to skip the end of the Michigan State/ODU NCAA basketball tournament game to go to bed paid off, as he finished first in 2:31:37 (Michigan State won). Men’s masters champion Dai Roberts, a Wales native and Va Beach resident, finished second overall in 2:32:34.
In the Open 8k, Kenyans again dominated with the top three separated by only one second. Eric Chirchir out-leaned his countrymen to win in 23:37. Tetyana Hladyr of Ukraine took the women’s title with a 25:49 finish, which was good enough for 10th overall!
